Build a Snowman Money Activity: Fun Winter Math for Counting Coins
Build a Snowman and Build Money Skills ❄️⛄
Do you love snowmen as much as I do? There’s just something so cheery about those round little faces and button eyes. Every snowman I’ve ever seen makes me smile!
This time of year always brings me a deep sense of gratitude. Living high up in the Colorado mountains at over 8,600 feet means I trade a few modern conveniences for sparkling snow, crisp air, and peaceful views. As a Southern girl originally from Louisiana (and then Houston), I can tell you that snowmen and mountain calm still feel like pure magic.
And speaking of snow… when I peeked at the thermometer this morning—yikes!
❄️ That chill got me thinking about hot cocoa, cozy sweaters, and of course, snowmen. But it also made me thankful. Thankful that I can connect with teachers like you, thankful for the chance to share math ideas and resources, and most of all, thankful for your support and encouragement.
Why Snowman Money Challenges Work
Counting coins is one of those tricky skills that can feel tedious for students. Worksheets? Not always exciting. But when kids get to build a snowman using money, the game completely changes!
With this Build-a-Snowman Money Challenge:
-
Students use a money menu to “buy” snowman parts.
-
They match the task card amount with coins to purchase each part.
-
Finally, they record their solution and build their snowman on the recording sheet.
It’s an engaging way to practice coin counting while also sneaking in problem-solving and critical thinking. Instead of groans, you’ll hear excitement—and maybe even a few giggles—as students check and re-check their amounts.
Teachers love it because:
-
It’s differentiated for 2nd and 3rd grade.
-
It works well in math centers or small groups.
-
Finished snowmen make an adorable winter bulletin board display.
